40 years of inspiration from nature

Ruskovilla’s story as a company that focuses on natural fibres and manufactures its products in Finland began in autumn 1981. It was preceded by the lifelong love and respect for nature held by Ruskovilla’s founders, Anneli Wahlsten and Mauno Mattsson. Nature and the fibres it gives us have a phenomenal ability to support people’s mental and physical wellbeing, and our founders wanted to include that in their clothing. This year we can take the beneficial effects of our products even further, as we are the first in the world to develop clothing and accessories that contain the Reconnecting Nature ™ forest extract. Developed by university researchers, the extract contains a diverse range of microbes that are found in forests and are scientifically proven to prevent the occurrence of autoimmune diseases and other illnesses. It is by no means a given that a family-run company based in Finland like us would still be in business four decades on, with global demand for our products. The secrets to our success are our loyalty to Anneli and Mauno’s initial idea and our skilled and motivated employees. Before reaching the customer, every product manufactured by Ruskovilla passes through countless pairs of hands that refuse to compromise on quality. Forest on your skin no matter where you are For 40 years we have harnessed the beneficial properties of natural fibres to support our customers’ wellbeing. This year, we can offer even more: the world’s first tube scarf and undershirt that contain forest microbe extract devel oped by researchers.  Natural diversity has decreased significantly in developed countries over the last 70 years. One of the consequences of that, and of an urban lifestyle, is that we are exposed to a narrower range of natural microbes. Microbes support our bodies’ immune system. The more contact we have with nature’s diverse microbes, the lower our risk of de veloping autoimmune-mediated diseases, such as allergies, asthma, and type 1 diabetes.  Reconnecting Nature ™ extract is a new Finnish innovation developed based on the results from the ADELE research project carried out at Finnish and international univer sities, and it contains natural microbes found in forests. When in direct contact with the skin, the microbe extract created by the Finnish company Uute Scientific helps to support the body’s own microbiome. Celebrate in sand In celebration of our 40th anniversary, we’ve chosen a sandy colour that combines both grey and beige tones. ANNELI AND MAUNO’S COURAGE AND PASSION LEFT A LEGACY It all began with a couple, a van, and the will to make the world a better place with natural fibres. That was the start of the family-run company, the first to launch clothes made from organic natural fibres on the Finnish market. Forty years later there is demand for the products from countries as far away as Japan, Australia, and North America.

“My husband Mauno Mattsson and I worked in an electronics company in Helsinki, but we were drawn to the peace and quiet of the countryside. In the late 1970s, we visited Artjärvi for the first time and learnt more about organic farming. It wasn’t long before we noticed that we were running an organic berry farm. My own children had already grown up, but I had heard a lot of complaints about how difficult it was to find proper wool nappies and baby clothes in Finland, and that’s where the idea came from,” explains the founder of Ruskovilla, and now the “compa ny granny”, Anneli Wahlsten . Without prior experience in the gar ment industry, the couple traveled to Sweden to study. They returned with a van loaded with used machinery and their heads full of ideas. Mauno drew the original logo, which has only been slightly

modified over the years, in autumn 1981 for the first store’s display window.

A REAL FAMILY-RUN COMPANY Due to popular demand, the range was soon expanded to include clothing for adults and children. The premises were swapped several times for larger ones near the centre of Artjärvi. “At first, we didn’t have our own patternmaker to design new products, but newly graduated clothing industry profes sional Tuula Hepola came to our rescue. She designed many of our successful prod ucts, such as the overalls for babies and children, an outdoor undershirt, accessories, and warmers. She also participated in the process to create our first product cata logues, and brainstormed the VillaVauva brochure,” Anneli remembers fondly. Today, Tuula and her family are

employed by the Ottobre pattern maga zine, which is published in Finland and 140 other countries in eight different languages. “In the early 1990s, my son-in-law Ossi Näkki came just to help out when we got busy. He ended up staying, and took over as managing director in 1999. In the same year, we launched our first online store alongside mail ordering and retail. Meanwhile, my daughter Leena Näkki is responsible for products, so this really is a family-run company,” explains Anneli. A PIONEER IN ORGANIC MATERIALS Over the years, Ruskovilla has been a real pioneer in the Finnish clothing industry: it was the first to introduce clothes made from organic merino wool, cotton, merino wool fleece, silk, and silk wool not only to Fin land, but often also to the Nordic countries. “I grew up on a farm, so for me, im portant values in managing Ruskovilla are living in balance with nature, Finnish work, doing things right the first time, and

above all using valuable materials as pre cisely as possible in production. Nowadays we are delighted to have customers whose families have used Ruskovilla for several generations. Our aim is for customers to find the same familiar and high-quality product in our range years later, but we have also introduced new materials and designs to the selection. I suppose that’s the reason behind our 40-year success story,” says Ossi Näkki. The future currently looks bright for Ruskovilla. The company has employed a younger generation alongside experienced professionals to learn the secrets of manu facturing Ruskovilla products. Consumers have also become more aware of alterna tives to fast fashion. Anneli and Mauno’s valuable legacy will take the company forward in the coming years and decades.

Colourful wool for the whole family As with other products, we have listened to our customers’ wishes concerning dyed merino wool, and in the future, we will use a richer shade of red and a slightly brighter shade of green. Underlayers in these colours as well as blue, black and white non-itch merino wool will be made in sizes 80 cm-XXL.

WOOL’S LONG JOURNEY TO OUR SKIN We have chosen merino wool as the material for our undergarments for comfort reasons. The minimum requirements for organic certification determine how wool is handled during every phase of production. The final work phases are carried out by Finnish textile industry professionals.

The roughness of merino wool is given in microns, which indicate the diameter of the fibre: the thinner the fibre, the smoother it is, and the less it irritates the skin. The merino wool we use is extra fine with a diameter of 18.5 microns. The corresponding figure for wool from Finnsheep is 24-31 mi crons. Merino wool contains all of the bene ficial qualities of wool, such as warmth and breathability, but it is especially suitable for use against bare skin. GIVING SHEEP A CHANCE AT A GREAT LIFE Our merino wool is certified organic. For wool, organic certification means that e.g. the pasture land is well taken care of, that the sheep can enjoy a species-appropriate life, and there are restrictions on the chem icals used to further process the wool. In addition, sheep farmers are entitled to reim bursement equal to the local wage level. Our wool complies with require ments for several certificates and comes from merino sheep farmed in Argentina and Uruguay, where the painful practice of mulesing is not necessary at all. Exter

nal parties supervise the farms, where the sheep graze freely and are mustered only once a year for shearing. Shearing is car ried out by trained professionals and the sheep are not tied up while being shorn. NO TO HARMFUL CHEMICALS After shearing, the raw wool is transported to our partners in Europe, where the wool is dyed. Organic standards stipulate that no chromium or heavy metal salts may be used in dyeing, and that dyeing must take place within a closed system so that no dye is released into waterways. No harmful finishing treatments, such as anti-mould or anti-moth agents are used in our products, so they can be used by everyone. The majority of wool sold today is superwash-treated, which means that the

surface of the yarn has been treated with resin to prevent felting. Previously, there was no eco-friendly alternative to this, but from this year our wool and silk wool products have been given a corresponding plasma treatment permitted in organic production. OUR PRODUCTS ARE MADE IN ARTJÄRVI Next, our merino wool travels to Orive si and Kangasala in Finland, where it is knitted into fabric. Our wool fleece knitted fabric is made in Germany, because Fin land does not have the necessary equip ment. Once the knitted fabric arrives at our factory in Artjärvi, our talented profession als turn it into high-quality clothing and accessories.

A BIOLOGIST’S LOVE FOR URBAN NATURE Tuomas Lahti is a biologist and environmental inspector from Helsinki. His work requires clothes that are suitable for use in the city and in the field. Small everyday choices are important to Tuomas when it comes to buying clothes and conserving urban nature.

Tuomas Lahti is a biologist and environ mental inspector from Helsinki. His work requires clothes that are suitable for use in the city and in the field. Small everyday choices are important to Tuomas when it comes to buying clothes and conserving urban nature. In his work as an environmental inspector for the city of Helsinki, the thirty year-old balances nature perspectives with the growing city’s other needs. “I spent my childhood playing in the forests of Helsinki and admiring the nature here. Urban nature and its wellbeing have always been extremely important to me, and its importance will only increase in the future as the city structure becomes dens er and the number of residents rises,” says Tuomas, explaining the significance of his work. Before working for the city of Helsin ki, Tuomas worked as an environmental consultant, as a researcher, and as a nature surveyor. “I was lucky enough to get to study the flora and swamp moss in fens in Central Lapland, and to birdwatch in the northern fells for my job. I look for sustainability and comfort in my hiking clothes and equip ment. If your clothes don’t feel nice and

comfortable, you won’t get any work done when you’re at the mercy of the outdoors,” explains Tuomas. YOU SHOULD BE WARM ,BUT NOT SWEATY Cycling is Tuomas’ favourite way to get about at work and in his free time. “I don’t want to give up cycling, as it’s by far the easiest way to get from A to B in Helsinki. In winter, I usually use Rusk ovilla’s merino wool shirt when cycling. I was given the shirt as a Christmas present in 2011 and I still frequently use it. It keeps me warm, but doesn’t make me sweat too much,” says Tuomas of his first Ruskovilla product. He has also found other Ruskovilla favourites over the last 10 years. “I’ve found that Ruskovilla’s fingerless gloves are the best for birdwatching in spring. They keep my hands warm, but I can still take notes. In winter, I wear Rusk ovilla’s silk wool long underpants under neath my jeans. They are thin enough that I don’t sweat even if I wear them indoors at the office. The wool fleece jacket is great almost all year round, he adds, listing his favourites. 

CHOICES AFFECT THE WELLBEING OF URBAN NATURE The biologist believes that our choices matter. “As consumers we should all review our choices regularly. For example, some times it can be very difficult to ascertain a plastic fibre product’s environmental impact over its entire life cycle: where did the plastic come from and where will it ultimately end up? Personally, I value Finnish products and producers, plus durability; once I’ve bought a piece of clothing, I want it to last a long time,” Tuomas explains his criteria. He also keeps everyday choices in mind when thinking about Helsinki’s nature. “Even very small actions can have a big influence on the state of our city’s nature. Sustainable consumer choices are extremely important, but so is how we move around in nature. Local nature sites in Helsinki already see high annu al visitor numbers. We should all strive to avoid damaging flora in particular whenever we spend time outdoors,” says Tuomas.

Scandinavia’s only organic silk collection When we were the first to introduce 100% organic silk clothing and accessories to the Scandinavian markets a few years ago, we had no idea how popular they would prove to be. “WE WANT TO SUPPORT ORGANIC AND FINNISH PRODUCTION” The Juntunen family has been using Ruskovilla for three generations: first day care teacher Mirjami dressed her babies in Ruskovilla, and later her daughter Maisa, who runs an organic farm, dressed her own babies in Ruskovilla. Their story has a lot in common with other users of Ruskovilla’s long-lasting products: even though there were some breaks in between, it was important to return to the high-quality and warm products.

MIRJAMI: I first heard about Ruskovilla in the 1980s through the Tampere Steiner school and day-care. We bought our first products from the Marian Kamari store (nowadays known as Miraakkeli). We had a total of five babies in the 80s and 90s, and they wore shirts, nappy pants and romper suits, and used wool blankets and millet husk pillows. The older children wore warm wool layers, which were handed down to the younger children. And then once the clothes were completely worn, I used the pure wool to fill dolls that I crafted. The years have gone by and my children have grown up. My husband and I still use Ruskovilla prod ucts, especially in cold weather and when hiking out doors. We also use a millet husk pillow every night. One of the things I like about Ruskovilla products is their versatility. It would do everyone good to wear nat ural materials because of their breathability and warmth.

MAISA: I have childhood memories of my younger sib lings dressing in Ruskovilla romper suits, and of wearing my own wool outfits and neck warm ers. I also remember shopping trips to a store in Kehräsaari, Tampere, which was fascinating to investigate as a child. When I was a little older, at times I felt that Ruskovilla’s products weren’t the most stylish, so I used them less. I became a mum for the first time just over 10 years ago, and when I had my own chil dren, Ruskovilla came back into my life. It felt wonderful and natural to dress my own baby in the same Ruskovilla body suits and rompers that I remembered from my own childhood. I still had some of my siblings’ old clothes left that I used, and they are now still being passed on to my siblings’ children. Even though my children have grown up the undershirts and pants still get worn. Some years ago we moved away from Töölö in Helsinki to Savo to run an organic dairy farm that has been in my husband’s family for generations. When we swapped office work for farming, it became extreme ly important for our clothes to be warm and practical. That’s how my husband and I found Ruskovilla’s underlayers, which we use daily during the winter. I value products that are organic and Finnish. I also want the products I buy to be long-lasting and practical. Ruskovilla’s products are all of these.

Handcrafted natural silk baby bonnets are one of our most iconic products. They are featured in baby photos year after year and treasured until they are passed on to the next user. Over the years we’ve listened to customers’ requests and added lovely colours to accompany off-white. You can use the bonnet for longer by gathering what will at first be excess knitted fabric onto the head using a silk ribbon.

When choosing the right size of silk wool clothing for adults especially, please remember that silk wool is more flexible than wool or silk. Our wool products’ knitted fabric will shrink a little in the first wash, which has been accounted for in the sizing, which will run a little loose before the first wash. Millet husk pillows provide support and relaxation Busy days, stress, and poor remote working ergonomics often result in stiff necks and clenched jaws. Our airy pillows filled with millet husk adapt to the sleeper’s position and help the body to relax during the night. The pillow is an eco-friendly choice: the cover is made from certi fied organic cotton and the filling is organic millet husks which did not meet food grade requirements, and can be disposed of as biowaste. Care for, wash, and mend natural fibres correctly Detailed care instructions for each of our natural fibres can be found on packaging, labels, and in product information on our online store. Our detergent contains caring olive and rapeseed oil to help retain the original proper ties of the fibres. As such, we only recommend the use of conditioner for wool fibres subject to heavy use, such as wool nappy pants. Together with Finnish company Oikiat Design we have developed the Vaatelaastari clothing patch in our organic silk wool. You can use the flexible knit patches to patch our wool and silk wool clothes without using a needle and thread. We also stock a comprehensive range of natural products for preventing and removing moths.
