Our new product this autumn is organic silk. We have long dreamt of the material while knowing how difficult it is to find worldwide. As a small family-owned company, we have dared to reach for the stars. Organic silk makes still up a negligible share of global industrial silk production, but we hope and believe it will increase in the future. Since 1995, silkworms have been farmed and bred organically in the province of Sichuan in central China. That is where Ruskovilla's organic silk comes from. We were invited to learn more about silk farming in the area. An article about our visit and photos can be found on pages 28-29, and there is an explainer on how GOTS- certified organic silk differs from ordinary silk on page 25. Our customers have fallen in love with the wool fleece we launched a year ago, and we have manufactured a group of new wool fleece products for people of all ages. In addition to grey, we will also aim to offer other colour options in smaller batches in our online store over the course of the year. Last year we created the opportunity on our website for our customers to share their user experiences of Ruskovilla products. We were inundated with fantastic experiences that were a real joy to read. We have picked some of them to feature on the pages of this catalogue. The explanation for the unique properties of wool is in its structure and its chemical composition. Thanks to its curly nature the wool fiber binds plenty of air. This air layer equalizes the temperature between the skin and the environment. The good feeling is increased by the ability of the wool to absorb moisture , up to 30% of its weight, as well as the ability to clean itself. Wool absorbs and neutralizes the skin secretions, so these do not form a breeding ground for bacteria. Wool clothes do not need to be washed often, as just airing helps them to freshen up and become clean. Wool is suitable for almost everyone, as the wool itself does not contain ingredients that cause allergies. Only the finest types of wool are suitable for underwear. Ruskovilla organic wool is very thin, long fibers and soft merino wool, which is seven times thinner than the wool of finnish sheep.

Organic SILK

100% Organic Silk Ruskovilla's new material is organically produced silk, which represents the best possible quality of undergarment material that can be produced today. The precious natural fibre has been known for millennia and is still important today - its therapeutic properties can alleviate many complaints, such as skin allergies and rheumatism. The composition of silk is very close to that of human skin, and that's why silk feels good even on the most sensitive skin. Silk absorbs moisture without feeling wet. Like wool, silk also repels dirt and neutralises smells. Silk is a good insulator, which means that it keeps you warm in cool weather, and cool in warm weather . The organic silk used by Ruskovilla is GOTS-certified. The mulberry trees used to feed the silkworms are cultivated organically, and the farming of the larvae follows organic domestic animal production practices.

Comfortable SILK WOOL

30/70% Comfortable Silk Wool Silk wool has the wonderful warmth of wool and the sweet softness of silk. Soft merino wool and pure natural silk operate as a combination for summer and winter. As a material, silk wool is thin, soft and elastic , giving the skin a wonderful feeling of warmth. Silk wool helps you feel good. Silk wool clothes are best suited under your everyday clothing as well at home as outdoors. Silk wool clothes are also suitable for the summer; on a camping trip, it is great "sleep underwear". People with holiday homes and boaters appreciate their silk wool underwear in Finland's cool summer and autumn weathers. We do not recommend silk wool outfits for the actual sweat exercise, because the intense sweating, combined with mechanical stress can easily cause premature felting of the garment.

Organic COTTON

100% Organic Cotton

Cotton is relatively durable and smooth-surfaced fiber. On the skin cotton clothing is comfortable and breathable, but it does not isolate heat like wool and silk. Cotton absorbs moisture well and its wash- ability is very good. Cotton is ideal for itchy skin and so strongly allergic people can use clothes made of cotton. Undyed organic cotton can be recommended for underwear material especially for infants and children with sensitive skin. The cotton used by Ruskovilla is organically farmed Indian cotton. In the cultivation of organic cotton is used a.o. biological pest control, organic fertilizer, crop rotation and hand-picking as well as social responsibility for the farmers and their families.

friendly organic wool fleece Soft organic wool fleece is great for layering either as it is or underneath

another coat. Last year's newcomer was a success, and we believe eco-friendly fleece made in Finland is becoming a firm favourite. The fleece is environ- mentally friendly throughout its lifespan; it contains no artificial fibres and sheds no microplastics, which are harmful to nature, during washing. Customer feedback: "I've been using the men's merino wool fleece I ordered for a few weeks now, and I have to say it's a fantastic product. I don't know what magic spells you've cast on this fleece, but I've never felt such soft merino - it doesn't itch at all." P.S. FACT Wool is also a safe fibre for hikers. It doesn’t catch fire easily, and requires a high temperature to ignite. Wool consists of proteins which slow the spread of fire. Wool’s ability to bind steam also makes it poorly flammable. If wool does catch fire, the flames are un- able to grow, since the fibres simply char and the wool extinguishes itself.

Breathtakingly gorgeous organic silk Ruskovilla's silk is now organic. Only the best for your skin. WONDERING WHAT ORGANIC SILK IS? Silk is an ancient and valuable natural material. Silk is still manufactured today using traditions that are thousands of years old. By far the most important producer of silk is the domestic silkmoth (Bombyx mori), whose larvae feed only on the leaves of the mulberry tree. The species has been domesticated and is farmed to produce silk. The greatest difference between organic and ordinary silk comes from the silkworm's nourishment. Inside the larvae's bodies, the leaves of the mulberry tree are turned into a material which the silkworms spin into a cocoon to protect themselves. The higher the quality of their nourishment, the higher the quality of the silk. The silkworms are fed organically farmed mulberry leaves which contain no chemical materials that are harmful to the environment. A good cocoon produces around 2,500m of silk fibre, 1,500m of which is a single thread known as filament silk, which can be spun directly from the cocoon. Ruskovilla's organic silk is precisely this single-thread filament silk. In recent decades, silk has become a mass-produced product, and the consequences of this can be seen as a degradation in the soil and a poorer quality of silkworms. But things can be done differently, which we saw with our own eyes when we visited the organic silk farm. Organic farming improves the state of the environment, and therefore farmers' living conditions in the long term. The method of farming involves more manual labour, which is good for employment in the rural area. Economic conditions also improve since the high-quality cocoons mean that production is better. In spring 2018, we were given the unique opportunity to visit the birthplace of organic silk, the province of Sichuan in China. An article about our trip can be found on pages 28-29. A VISIT TO THE BIRTHPLACE OF ORGANIC SILK

Our new material, organic silk, is produced in the Qianjiang mountain range in China, where we travelled in late May to learn more about the silk farm and mill. Our trip to the silk farm began in Chengdu, the capital of the province of Sichuan. From there, we took the bullet train to the town of Chongqing, and then drove for a few hours to Qianjiang. The scenery was breathtakingly beautiful: wide, flowing river channels, verdant farmland, and tall mountains with forests of clouds around their peaks. Our visit was timed so that we would see the larvae just before they span their cocoons. When we arrived at the farm, there were a

few million silkmoth larvae waiting for us, eagerly chewing at the mulberry leaves offered to them under a protective shelter. Caring for the silkworms is a matter of precision: the temperature must be just right, and at first the food has to be cut very finely by hand for the small larvae, which require feeding five times a day, including night feeds. The larvae we saw were almost fully grown, and they were given fresh leaves three times per day. Wewere able to climb up themountain slope to watch how the leaves were collected by the sack for the rapidly growing silkworms, which had huge appetites. The silkworms' food, the mulberry trees, are pruned to remain in bush form so that it is easier to collect the leaves. We also heard about the farm's organic farming method and were able to meet the employees. The farm does not use artificial fertilisers or pesticides, and themulberry trees are not grown in isolation, but in a simulated natural environment along with a range of fruit trees and other plant species. and provides a good habitat for the buzzing bees and other animals.

Once the larvae have achieved their full size, they stop eating and search for one of the cardboard "cells" that have been made for them, where they spin a silk cocoon around themselves. After a few days, the cocoons are ready to be sent to the mill, where the sericin that covers the cocoon is brushed away. Below that is fine silk filament, or long silk fibre, which can form single threads up to one and a half kilometre in length. It is from this material that our new silk knitwear is made. Ruskovilla is committed to sustainable development principles and strives towards eco-friendly, social and economic sustainability in its operations. In addition to the environment, people's wellbeing also matters. Since the product is of such a high-quality and involves manual labour, the employees play an important role, and they are paid an appropriate salary for their work, which is carried out in fair conditions.
