GUEST OF NATURE

The world was a different place in 1981, when Ruskovilla was founded. However, the increasing burden on nature was already causing concern, as were the unsustainable operating models in product manufacturing. The textile industry is one of the major polluters and the culprit to blame is fast fashion. We have been going against the tide from the very beginning. We are in fact a quite untypical player in the textile industry, because growth has not been an end in itself for us. Instead, our aim has always been to make as natural and sustainably produced high-quality underwear as possible, because it really matters what we wear against the skin. That is why we only use certified organic raw materials that are produced respecting the well-being of animals, the soil and people. No harmful chemicals or pesticides are used at any stage of production. When you wear a Ruskovilla product, you can rest assured that it has been produced responsibly, with respect for nature and people. Our products are designed and made in Finland in our own factory, today and in the future. In order to ensure the high quality of products and employment in our home country, we do not sell our products at a discount, as is typical of fast fashion. This way we also hope to encourage people to make thoughtful buying decisions. To extend the life cycle of our garments, we have introduced products to our collection that make repairing and mending easier. We are the only manufacturer in Finland to offer clothing made of organic silk and 100% merino wool fleece – and this means we contribute to tackling the ever-growing problem of microplastics. We do not offer fashion, but instead, outfits that are practical and timeless – considered classics already. Our garments are part of babies’ first moments and the everyday life of families. Many police officers and firefighters wear Ruskovilla garments under their uniforms, and loggers and warehouse workers trust our quality underwear to keep them warm. Our baselayer has been worn when conquering mountains, hiking in arctic conditions and sleeping under the stars. This is the kind of sustainability and permanence we want to nurture. And we are grateful for all of this.

FROM FOREST TRAILS TO CITY LONG-AWAITED NOVELTIES IN WOOL FLEECE COLLECTION

Products that many of our customers have asked for have been added to our beloved wool fleece collection: a casual hoodie and a multifunctional vest. Both products have unisex sizing, suitable for both men and women. The wool fleece jacket has become a trusted garment for many, worn all year round at the summer cottage, in the office and when out and about in nature. The wool fleece jackets and accessories now come in two new colours: greige and sky blue. The comfortable wool fleece trousers are available in grey and anthracite.

· 5 · ORGANIC WOOL FLEECE

Wool fleece is warm as a hug and soft as powder snow. It’s made of responsibly produced, 100% organic merino wool, making it a natural and microplastics-free alternative to traditional synthetic fleece. Wool fleece is ideal as an extra layer in mid-winter and on its own on warmer days. The new hoodies and vests can be combined with many outfits and, like other wool fleece garments, are perfect for wearing during active exercise, in cool offices and as comfortable loungewear at home or at the summer cottage. MAKE SURVIVAL ENJOYABLE EQUIPMENT FOR ARCTIC SKI TOURING

The weather forecast promises a brisk -30°C cold in March in Nikkaluokta, Sweden, just as I am participating in a week-long ski touring trip around Kebnekaise. The “feels like -38°C” temperature in the forecast makes me seriously consider every detail of my equipment, especially clothing. How should one dress for such cold conditions?

STRATEGY AGAINST COLD When it comes to layering, I prefer merino wool for layers closest to the skin. The properties of wool are known to be unbeatable, particularly in winter conditions. It is important that moisture is transferred away from the skin and movement feels light and comfortable. Merino wool’s thermal insulation properties are brilliant thanks to the curly texture, and organic wool contains no chemicals harmful to the skin or the environment. In addition, wool is naturally dirt-repellent and neutralises odours, which is pleasant in camping conditions. Even if you use a sledge to transport equipment when ski touring, the total weight matters, since you need more equipment and food anyway in the winter. I always start planning by considering the problem points I have with winterwear. My thighs and buttocks get cold easily, so I decided to try Ruskovilla’s outdoor baselayer because of the double-layer reinforcements from the knees up to the waist – extra warmth exactly where needed. I also choose short underpants in merino wool , as I have heard that wool shorts over wool pants are an effective extra layer in extremely cold conditions. For the top, I choose an outdoor shirt, because the high collar and the wind flap under the zipper effectively protect the neck from the wind and also prevent the ice-cold zipper from touching the chin. The hem, longer at the back, provides additional protection when wearing shell pants with a normal waist, which always feels a little low in winter. I am not familiar with wool fleece as a material, but the thermal properties of soft brushed wool knit sound good. It also warms my heart to know that wool fleece is a 100% natural product, so that no microplastics are released into nature, and no chrome dyes or heavy metal salts have been used. Since my face is also sensitive to cold, I also take along a merino wool beanie and tube scarf , as well as protective head wear that seems like a good alternative to a neck warmer that gets wet easily.

TOUR AROUND OF KEBNEKAISE Our skiing trail runs counterclockwise around Sweden’s highest mountain, Kebnekaise. The trail is like an all-encompassing mini package of mountain hiking, where you can experience everything from mountain birch groves to the embrace of the fell at the altitude of 1,100 m and, from there, to the pass between the mountains. The weather often changes unexpectedly and shapes the landscape in special ways. Sometimes it feels like skiing inside a marshmallow as the colour of the pink sky is reflected on the soft shapes of powder snow. On another day, everything is so white that you can only see subtle outlines of the mountain wall, but not where they start and end. Then again, a clear and still frosty day lifts your mood as high as the sun that has finally emerged, but when the wind starts blowing the snow and turning the pass between the great mountains into a wind tunnel, you come to life in a completely different way. However, when you are dressed correctly, you can endure almost anything that nature wants to offer. EXTRA LAYERS Outdoor baselayers work really well. Merino wool feels pleasant under the shell garments when skiing, and the long sleeves of the outdoor shirt, and hem at the back, protect my skin and I do not need to pull them down constantly. On the fourth day, when we start to climb upwards from Nallo, and our route runs in the shade all morning, it feels like extra insulation for the thighs would be in order. I put on short underpants during the break and they provide extra warmth so well that I feel fine with them on, even on the next day as the wind goes up to 10 m/s. This is also the first time I put on the protective headwear, which is a perfect fit and stays in place, even though I keep moving its opening over my face with thick gloves on. You appreciate such small details immensely when the conditions start to get challenging. When the sun goes down, the temperature falls below -20°C on many evenings. Even though I wear the outdoor shirt and pants all day, I keep them on when sleeping – they feel comfortable to wear even

1. At Vistasvaggi, the temperature plunged to -32°C. Sleeping bags are aired outside during breakfast in the morning.

Wool fleece is a highly functional garment for breaks and at camp.

2. On the fifth day, there was a strong wind as the journey continued to t he pass between the mountains. Pitching of tents in the storm while the wind was blowing at 10 m/s. 3. On the third day in Nallo, we arrive to camp at sunset. A merino wool tube scarf and beanie are vital accessories. Actually, I wore the beanie almost all the time, except when letting it dry in the warm tent. 4. On the fourth day, we came to descending terrain and the fell peaks looked lovely on the horizon. at the end of the day. At night, I wake up to my nose feeling cold in the small breathing gap in my sleeping bag. I pull the high collar of the outdoor baselayer top up right under my nose and open the fold of the merino wool beanie to cover my nose. It is great when clothes are adjustable. I have taken the wool fleece inside my sleeping bag and use it as a small extra blanket that I move a little to warm my sides. Heat spreads in an instant and it is easy to fall asleep again. SAFE CAMPING IN WINTER When camping in winter conditions, there is no need to feel cold in the tent. Clothes dry quickly in the heat of the gas stove up in the tent where socks, gloves and beanies hang at the end of the day. Wool is an excellent material, because it is more fire resistant than synthetic fibres, it has a high ignition point and does not melt. I air the outdoor baselayer outside one evening, but otherwise I let it dry on me. As soon as I arrive at camp I put on my wool fleece jacket. It is so warm that I don’t wear it under my shell jacket when skiing, except when the wind is really high, but otherwise I wear it all the time. TRUSTED FRIENDS OF MERINO WOOL Our adventure around Kebnekaise takes a total of six days. Finally, we arrive at Sarri in Nikkaluokta, and it is time to start our journey home. On this trip, Mother Nature gave us a wonderful experience of winter hiking, and was generous with the weather conditions. It taught me to trust the equipment. Good hiking clothes become like trusted friends you can rely on even during your next adventure. You never know what conditions you will encounter on the next trip.

The natural technical properties of wool are unbeatable. When combined with carefully considered details such as long sleeves with thumbholes, a high collar with a wind flap and double-layer reinforcements on knees, inner thighs and gusset, you get an outdoor baselayer that won’t let you down even in the most challenging conditions. ”Over the decades, our outdoor baselayers have been worn in extreme conditions, including climbing the Himalayas, riding in Mannerheim’s footsteps in Asia, skiing to the South and North Poles and across Greenland, not to mention countless hiking trips in magnificent Finnish nature in all four seasons.” Outdoor baselayer designed for challenging conditions

AN EXACT FIT FOR YOU MIX & MATCH MERINO WOOL BASELAYERS

Merino wool is the preferred choice as the baselayer next to the skin. The ingenuity of wool lies in its adaptability to the wearer’s needs: it regulates body temperature, is breathable when sweating and keeps you warm even when moist. Naturally antibacterial wool is resistant to odours and airing makes it fresh again. For the baselayer, you can choose the top and bottom that suit your needs and wishes.

Silk wool is a blend of 30% natural silk and 70% organic merino wool, which makes it a smooth and breathable material for underwear. Thinner than merino wool, it’s perfect as a baselayer in colder months, and great for year-round use if you tend to feel chilly. During spring and autumn, it adds comfortable warmth for trips to the cottage, camping, or boating. In winter, silk wool provides cosy insulation under everyday or outerwear.

By wearing Metsä products you can experience the benefits of Finnish nature on you skin all year round, wherever you are. CLOTHING TO SUPPORT IMMUNITY METSÄ PRODUCTS CONTAIN BENEFICIAL FOREST MICROBES

Spending time in nature has many beneficial effects on our health, such as lowering our heart rate, reducing stress levels and calming our minds. Scientific research has also proven that regular contact with nature’s rich biodiversity is essential for our immune system to develop and function correctly. IMMUNITY IS BUILT AT AN EARLY AGE Modern life and urbanisation affect our possibilities for a regular connection with nature. The absence of natural environments, and especially the lack of physical contact with nature’s rich biodiversity, brings about new immune system-related problems. Research has shown that the more microbial agents children are exposed to early in life, the less likely they

are to develop allergies and autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune diseases, such as allergies, asthma and type 1 diabetes, are among the world’s fastest-growing types of illnessess. Regular exposure to nature’s rich biodiversity helps maintain a healthy and normal immune system even in adulthood. BENEFITS OF NATURE ON YOUR SKIN Re-Connecting Nature® extract is a patented Finnish innovation, developed by scientists at the Universities of Tampere and Helsinki. The extract contains a mix of safe, diverse and beneficial microbes, emulating the diversity of Finnish nature. It works through skin contact, enabling the microbes to stimulate and support the body’s immune system. We decided to add

Re-Connecting Nature® forest extract to our underwear and accessories, and that is why we call them Metsä, the Finnish word for “Forest”. SLEEP TIGHT EMBRACED BY THE FOREST Underwear comes in wide contact with bare skin, enabling extensive and long-term exposure to nature’s beneficial microbes – also in urban environments and in winter. Metsä products are made of certified organic silk wool, which is suitable for year-round use, even for sensitive skin and babies. A good idea is to wear Metsä clothing at night, so you get the benefits of nature on your skin conveniently while you sleep. Studies show that the extract remains in knitted silk wool fabric for multiple washes. For optimal benefits, use Metsä products as much as possible and clean them primarily by airing. We manufacture products from three different types of natural fibres. When choosing the right size of silk wool clothing for adults especially, please remember that silk wool is more flexible than wool or silk. Our wool products’ knitted fabric will shrink a little in the first wash, which has been accounted for in the sizing, which will run a little loose before the first wash. None of our products need to be washed before use. 54 59 64 Chest circumference 54 57 60 64 68 72 76 Waist circumference 53 55 57 59 61 63 66 Hip circumference 58 60 64 68 72 76 80 Inside leg (crotch — floor) 35 41 47 53 59 65 70 Head circumference 50 51 52 53 54 55 55 Palm size from wrist to fingertips 12 12 14 14 16 16 16 Neck — wrist 39 43 47 51

EVERY PATCH COUNTS CIRCULAR ECONOMY, INTEGRAL TO OUR PROCESS

We make clothing sustainably, and that is not a one-off act or a fancy marketing gimmick. It has been our way of life ever since Ruskovilla was founded in 1981. On every step of the way, from the cultivation of the raw material to its return to nature, the aim is to ensure that people and nature live in complete harmony.

FOR ARTS AND CRAFTS Our high-quality raw materials are a sought-after material among artisans as well. Edge strips of wool fleece knit have become popular rug rags. Wool wad and the new wool fleece strips are suitable for arts and crafts, whereas silk patches are carded and spun together with Finnsheep wool into knitting yarns at Pirtin Kehräämö spinnery, that also produces our soft flocky yarn. The sock mending yarn is Pirkka yarn by Taito Pirkanmaa. a long useful life for garments. As time goes by and usage starts to show as wear, it is time to mend the garment. It is best to do the mending when the knit starts to grow thin but holes have not yet appeared. To make mending easier, our product range includes fabric patches made for us by the Finnish company FabPatch Oy from our organic silk wool. The elastic patches make it easy to mend your wool and silk wool garments conveniently without a needle and thread. Oval-shaped wool fleece patches are suitable for mending the elbows or knees of wool fleece products. The new handy mending thread package includes a needle and makes it easy to repair small holes in wool or silk wool garments even on the go. MEND TO EXTEND THE LIFE CYCLE Proper washing and storage are essential for

Working for the good of people and nature is at the core of our operations. We believe that underwear, being in direct contact with the skin, plays a major role in the well-being of people. Our products are made responsibly from certified organic natural fibres, with respect for nature and people, from the fibre to the very last stitch. NO HURRY RESULTS IN LESS WASTE Ruskovilla’s products are designed and manufactured in Artjärvi, Finland, in an old dairy building built in 1927. Since all our employees are in-house on a monthly salary, there is ample time to plan the various stages of production carefully. When the material is cut, the patterns are placed in such a way that as little valuable raw material is left over as possible. Small pieces can be used, for example, to make baby mittens or patch material for repairing clothes. The same precision and minimising waste is repeated at all stages. NEW LIFE FOR PATCHES However, small patches are inevitably left over during the cutting phase of clothes manufacturing. None of these are discarded, but delivered to Dafecor in Turenki, where they are shredded and carded into wadding. The wadding made from white wool and silk wool patches is delivered to Laatupeite in Tampere, where our wool-filled bedding is made. Dafecor manufactures, for example, parquet felt from the coloured patches.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FAVOURITE CLOTHES AIR OFTEN – WASH INFREQUENTLY – PROTECT FROM MOTHS

Natural fibres are the most natural thing in the world. We use only the highest quality certified organic raw materials in our clothing and accessories: merino wool, silk and silk wool. Proper care ensures the longest possible useful life for the products.

FRESHEN BY AIRING Natural fibres, wool and silk in particular, have many self-cleaning properties. Airing is often all that is needed to freshen up the product and this allows longer washing intervals. After regular use, wool clothes should be washed, as washing helps the wool fibres recover and maintain their elasticity, thereby extending the useful life. Clothes should also be washed before being placed in storage for a longer period of time. FOLLOW THE WASHING INSTRUCTIONS Our wool and silk garments can be washed by hand or in a washing machine at 30°C with a hand or wool wash cycle. For wool fleece, we recommend a machine wash at 30°C with hand or wool wash cycle. After washing, the garment is shaped when wet and left to dry on a horizontal surface. We recommend the caring and ecological Sonett washing liquid for wool and silk, which contains olive oil and rapeseed oil. PROTECT AGAINST PESTS As our products are not treated with mothproofing chemicals, we recommend storing them in a tightly closed plastic bag when you are not using them daily or when you put the garments away in long-term storage. Red cedar rings and moth traps are a safe and organic way to protect natural fibres.

Sonett washing liquid for wool and silk 4 € 120 ml and 11.50 € 500 ml Sonett wool conditioner 7.50 € 120 ml for wool fibres that are in heavy use, such as woollen nappy pants

Sonett gall soap bar 5 € 120 g liquid 5.50 € 120 ml
