EVERY PATCH COUNTS CIRCULAR ECONOMY IS PART OF OUR EVERYDAY WORK
Our sustainable clothing production is not about isolated actions or clever marketing tricks. It has been our way of life ever since Ruskovilla was founded in 1981. Every stage, from cultivating the raw material to its return to nature, is guided by the aim of people and nature living in harmony.
GENTLE ON NATURE, GOOD FOR YOU Working for the good of people and nature is at the core of our operations. We believe that underwear, being in direct contact with the skin, plays a major role in people’s well-being. Our products are made responsibly from certified organic natural fibres, with respect for both nature and people, from the fibre to the very last stitch. NO HURRY RESULTS IN LESS WASTE Ruskovilla’s products are designed and manufactured in Artjärvi, Finland, in a former dairy building dating back to 1927. As all our employees are on a monthly salary and work in-house, there is time to plan each stage of production carefully. When cutting materials, patterns are placed in such a way that as little valuable raw material as possible goes to waste. Smaller pieces are used, for example, to make baby mittens or patch material for repairing clothes. The same precision and waste minimisation are applied at every stage. NEW LIFE FOR PATCHES Some small offcuts inevitably remain during the cutting phase of garment production. None of these are dis carded: they are sent to Dafecor in Turenki, where they are shredded and carded into wadding. Wadding made from white wool and silk wool offcuts is delivered to Laatupeite in Tampere, where our wool-filled bedding is produced. Dafecor also manufactures parquet underlay felt, for example, from coloured offcuts.
FOR ARTS AND CRAFTS Our high-quality raw materials are also sought after by artisans. Edge strips of wool fleece knit are popular for making rag rugs. Wool wadding and fleece strips are suitable for various crafts, while silk offcuts are carded and spun together with Finnsheep wool into knitting yarns at Pirtin Kehräämö spinning mill, which also produces our soft flocky yarn. The sock mending yarn is Pirkka yarn by Taito Pirkanmaa. MEND TO EXTEND THE LIFE CYCLE Proper washing and storage are essential for ensuring a long life for garments. As time goes by and wear appears, it’s time to mend the garment. The best time to mend is when the knit begins to thin but before holes form. To make this easier, our product range includes fabric patches made by the Finnish company FabPatch Oy from our organic silk wool. These elastic patches allow you to mend wool and silk wool garments quickly without a needle and thread. Oval-shaped wool fleece patches are ideal for reinforcing elbows or knees on fleece products. Our handy mending thread kit includes a needle and makes it easy to repair small holes in wool or silk wool garments – even on the go. Patches and mending thread are available at our online store.
