Caring for reusable nappies is simpler than you might think Reusable nappies: 1. Store used cotton nappies separately from other laundry before washing, for example in a lidded bucket half-filled with cold water. A splash of vinegar or a few drops of antibacterial tea tree oil can help reduce odours and bacteria. 2. Open wet nappies before placing them in the bucket. Soiled nappies can be rinsed using a handheld bidet spray or under running water. Biodegradable nappy liners (such as rice paper) can be composted or disposed of with organic waste. 3. Wash reusable nappies at 60°C. Every third wash, use an 80– 90°C cycle. Heavily soiled nappies can benefit from a pre-wash. 4 . Avoid using fabric softener, as it may irritate your baby’s skin. Nappies can be tumble dried, but a full load will also fit on a drying rack. 5. Each time the bucket is emptied, wash it thoroughly with detergent and hot water. Wool nappy pants: 1. If not visibly soiled, wool covers only need washing a couple of times a month. The smell of urine usually disappears with airing. 2. Treat stains immediately with gall soap. Then wash by hand using a wool detergent or olive oil soap in warm water, gently pressing the fabric. 3. Rinse carefully, then press dry between a towel and lay flat to dry in an airy space, away from direct heat. 4. To maintain absorbency and softness, treat wool covers occasionally with a wool care conditioner. How to lanolise wool covers: Dissolve 1–2 tablespoons of wool care conditioner in a small amount of hot water. Add lukewarm water until you have about 1 litre of hand-warm solution. Submerge clean, damp wool covers, gently move and press them. After treatment, dry as described above.
