Swaddling soothes newborns Swaddling has long traditions as a way to soothe a baby to sleep. It offers a gentle transition into the new world after birth, helping to calm restless movements and create a snug, womb-like sense of security. Today, swaddling is done gently, allowing your baby to bring their hands to their mouth.

1.

2.

Lay the baby on their back on a swaddle cloth, top edge of the cloth above shoulders.

Set the baby’s hand on their chest and turn the top right-hand edge of the swaddle cloth over the baby’s right shoulder diagonally towards the lower left-hand edge.

5.

6.

Straighten the swaddle cloth’s hem, and turn it on top of the baby.

Fold the cloth’s left edge through the baby’s back onto the tummy side. Straighten the pleats carefully, so that they don’t press the baby’s back.
