Milk is a baby’s first nourishment For many parents, breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful part of caring for a baby. Breast milk is the perfect first food, adapting to your baby’s growth and changing needs. It is rich in essential vitamins and proteins, as well as antibodies that support your baby’s immune system and help protect against infections. Your baby longs for closeness, touch, warmth, and the familiar rhythm of their mother’s heartbeat, so well known from time in the womb. Skin-to-skin contact increases oxytocin, often called the “love hormone”, which supports breastfeeding and strengthens the bond between baby and parent. Many babies feed 8–12 times in a day, though this varies naturally. Night feeds are common and help maintain milk production, as prolactin (the hormone responsible for milk supply) is at its highest during the night. Sometimes breastfeeding is not easy, and for some, it may not be possible. The course of birth, the health of mother and baby, and many individual factors can all influence how breastfeeding begins. Challenges in the early days are common, and you do not need to face them alone. Support is available through maternity clinics, lactation consultants, and peer support groups. Closeness and warmth in the early days A gentle beginning to your shared journey
